The Tongass is the country’s largest remaining temperate rainforest and single largest carbon sink among national forests. A bill in front of Congress, the “Landless Bill”, threatens over 100,000 acres of rich wildlife habitat including old growth forest in the Tongass with new logging and development. Meanwhile, the Trump regimes attempt to rescind the Roadless Rule threatens over 9 million acres in the Tongass and tens of millions of acres of national forest nationwide. Both of these assaults would clear cut forest lands vital to the life, history, and culture of the Tsimshian, Tlingit, and Haida peoples of Alaska.
